More and more these days contractors, architects and DIY deck builders are utilizing metal joist sub-substructures to ensure longer-lasting, lower maintenance decks. The DeckWise® Self-Tapping Metal Joist Deck Screw is designed explicitly for metal joist applications.
This handy fastening screw can be used to attach most types of decking materials such as hardwoods, heat treated lumber (thermally modified), soft woods, composite and PVC with aluminum, stainless steel and steel substructures. Pre-drilling pilot holes through the decking is still recommended.

find a local dealerTo answer the question of galvanic corrosion, yes, there is a reaction when two dissimilar metals are in contact with each other in the presence of an electrolyte (such as saltwater or moisture). This creates a reaction where the weaker of the two metals begins to corrode and sacrifices itself to the other metal. To protect against that, we use a Xlyan® coating. This coating is known for its excellent non-stick and low-friction properties, as well as its resistance to corrosion, chemicals, and high temperatures. Making the Xlyan® coating a multiple purpose coating for this application.
To further with the corrosion resistance; when galvanized steel and 410 stainless-steel with a Xylan® coating come into contact, the presence of the Xylan® coating can affect the galvanic reaction between the two metals. The Xylan® coating acts as a barrier between the galvanized steel and the 410 stainless-steel, reducing direct contact between the two metals and thus minimizing the potential for galvanic corrosion.
Other metal joist screw brands on the other hand are using a black epoxy style coating as a barrier to limit the potential for a galvanic reaction. But outside of it just being a tough coating, it does not offer the additional advantages that Xylan® does.
