WiseWrap® LEDGERTAPE®

Preventing and stopping wood rot is one of the most important aspects to consider when building a deck. Whether building a hardwood, pressure treated or composite deck, trapped moisture and water is the enemy that will shorten the lifespan and compromise the safety of your deck. Prevent future wood rot on your deck and build with WiseWrap® LedgerTape® flashing barrier tape made by DeckWise® to ensure many years of outdoor enjoyment. Each roll of WiseWrap® LedgerTape® measures 12" x 25' and is approximately 35-40 mil thick.

LEDGER BOARD & DECK POST PROTECTION

Our deck flashing tape is a flexible polyethylene waterproof wood flashing and barrier material made with a rubberized asphalt mastic adhesive. Easily apply this durable, self-adhesive material as flashing to protect deck ledger boards against water. Wrap in-ground wooden deck posts to provide a barrier against fungi and soil moisture.

Traditional metal flashing uses nails or screws to secure the top lip to the side of the house thus creating an unsealed hole. Even when covered by house wrap and siding, there is still an unsealed hole into the side of the building. WiseWrap® LedgerTape® is self-adhesive as well as self-sealing and does not require nails or screws to secure to the side of the house, eliminating unsealed holes. Any nail or screw that might penetrate the deck flashing tape will instantly be sealed around to prevent moisture from ever entering the hole. Likewise, lag bolts and even staples are automatically sealed to prevent the intrusion of moisture.

PEEL & APPLY

Simply peel and stick to ledger boards and deck posts to immediately create an effective moisture barrier against premature wood rot and degradation. By blocking moisture and preventing wood rot, the lifespan of your deck is maximized. WiseWrap® LedgerTape® can also be applied wherever metal connectors and fasteners come into contact with treated lumber framing to prevent corrosion.

The use of a metal ledger flashing cap over the ledger board crown is not needed unless required by local building code. If that's the case, WiseWrap® will self-seal around any nails or screws penetrating the ledger tape from the flashing drip cap.

WiseWrap® LedgerTape® can be used with not only pressure treated decking boards but also with thermally treated lumber, all exotic hardwoods, as well as most composite deck material. Likewise, apply to all in-ground deck posts that need moisture protection including mailbox posts, fence posts, or deck framing supports.

Ledger Board Flashing

12” DeckWise® WiseWrap® LedgerTape® is the perfect deck flashing to protect deck ledger boards from the accumulation of water behind the vertical wall of the structure to which it is mounted.

When this ledger tape flashing is applied over ledger boards it creates a waterproof barrier that trains water to move over the board and drip down.

Wood rot is caused when moisture is allowed to seep between lumber boards and whatever it is attached to.

In-Ground Deck Posts

Degradation of in-ground decking posts is caused by fungal growth when soil comes in contact with unprotected wooden posts. This can even occur when the deck post is in a concrete base.

Rot typically occurs down to six inches below grade level. WiseWrap® LedgerTape® acts as a barrier between the damp soil and the wooden deck post preventing wood rot. It can be used to protect all in-ground posts from mailbox posts to fencing posts.

Deck Joists

Wood decay will also occur when deck screws or nails penetrate the deck board surface, piercing the joist sub-framing below. Deck installers can use WiseWrap® LedgerTape® over deck joists to self-seal around nails, screws, and other fasteners to prevent the intrusion of moisture and water. Simply slit the tape into 4 inch wide strips to cover the tops of multiple deck joists. It will also assist as a noise dampening membrane between deck boards and the sub-framing. We suggest using WiseWrap® JoistTape™ by DeckWise® as a complimenting product for a complete deck barrier flashing solution.

Corrosion Barrier

Corrosion can occur wherever the chemicals in ACQ, CA-B, or ACZA treated lumber are in direct contact with metal surfaces such as galvanized metal and aluminum. Applying WiseWrap® LedgerTape® between these surfaces creates a physical barrier to protect metal flashings and hangers at deck plates and anywhere treated lumber is used.

WiseWrap® LedgerTape® should be used along the entire length of the deck’s ledger board which is attached to the building. Determine the length of tape needed then cut off any extra. Measure 7 ½” down the face of the ledger board and use a snap line to mark the entire length of the ledger board.

Working from the bottom up, remove paper backing and align lower edge of WiseWrap® LedgerTape® along the snap line. Adhere WiseWrap® LedgerTape® to the ledger board face, over the crown pressing firmly into crease, and smooth upward flat against the wall. WiseWrap® LedgerTape® must extend at least 3” from the top of the ledger board up the side of the wall.

Most ledger board is 1 ½” wide however adjustments to the lower snap line measurement should be made to accommodate variations in ledger board width.

*Check with your local permit office for building code compliance.

Applying DeckWise® WiseWrap LedgerTape® to deck posts is quick and easy It's That Easy!

When protecting posts, WiseWrap® LedgerTape® should be applied at the ground level with 2 to 3” extending above the finished grade. To determine the proper location on the post for produc placement, insert the post in the hole, mark the post indicating the grade level, and then remove the post from the hole.

To determine the proper length of WiseWrap® LedgerTape® to use, without removing the white release paper, wrap the material around the post, making sure that there is enough material for a minimum 3” overlap. Cut WiseWrap® LedgerTape® to proper length.

Remove release paper and wrap around post while firmly pressing in place. To maximize adhesion, roll with a small hand roller. To provide additional protection against deep standing water around the post, a bead of non-silicone caulk may be applied to the top edge of the WiseWrap® LedgerTape®.

PRECAUTIONS

  1. WiseWrap® LedgerTape® should be applied to clean dry surfaces when temperatures are a minimum of 40°F or warmer.
