DeckWise® WiseCoat® Clear Premium Wood Deck, Siding & Fence Sealer stands as a cutting-edge water-based penetrating wood waterproofing system meticulously crafted to thwart water intrusion by deeply penetrating the wood surface. This non-film forming premium waterproofing wood sealer is engineered to safeguard wood outdoor decking, siding, and fences from the detrimental effects of moisture, including cupping, warping, and splitting. Offering a solution that permits the natural aging of wood and hardwoods without succumbing to decay, WiseCoat® Clear is a testament to advanced wood protection.
It is non-yellowing and the clear formula will not alter the natural beauty of Tropical Hardwoods, Thermally Modified Woods and Pressure Treated wood. The tinted formulas provide additional protection from the sun on decking, siding and walkways.
DeckWise® WiseCoat® Wood Sealer is warranted to prevent long-standing water accumulation for up to 10 years on vertical and up to 6 years on horizontal surfaces when used according to the product instructions.
For those desiring to preserve the color of freshly sealed wood, the addition of WiseCoat® Tint provides an avenue for enhanced visual appeal. A palette of five (5) Tint colorants, including Original (Light Brown), Brown, Dark Brown, Black, and Gray, allows users to tailor their aesthetic preferences.
It is highly recommended to acquire a pre-mixed sample to evaluate your color preference and product compatibility with your actual wood before commencing your project.
Please be aware that the Tint color, wood species, age, and condition of your decking or siding will influence the final color and finish of all WiseCoat® products. The wood Tint swatches presented on this website serve as representations and may appear differently when applied to your specific wood project.
The images displayed feature authentic wood samples of the selected species. Each sample has been treated with a single coat of WiseCoat® Deck, Siding, and Fence Sealer. Additionally, WiseCoat® Clear has been included to showcase the original color of the wood decking or cladding for your convenience. The Clear option permits your wood to naturally weather gray while still offering waterproofing protection.
These colors are available through special order. Please note that they are indicative only and may vary depending on several factors, including application technique and the condition and species of wood.
Compatible with a range of woods, including exotic hardwoods, thermally modified woods, pressure-treated, and most softwoods, WiseCoat® clear or tinted provides a versatile solution for diverse wood projects. This wood waterproofing system ensures a family-friendly smooth surface finish, and the tints offer UV protection to slow the lightening/silvering process.
While the WiseCoat® deck and siding waterproofing system boasts a remarkable resistance to peeling or flaking, its longevity may be influenced by various factors, including inclement weather, regional conditions, and seasonal changes. Over time, there's a possibility of premature fading, wearing, or gradual erosion, particularly with frequent use and wear. Notably, newly installed smooth wood exposed to the elements will lighten faster than older, rougher wood over a similar timeframe, as the wood continues to acclimate.
Apply the first coat, maintaining a wet edge to ensure smooth and even coverage. Be sure to back brush any puddles to prevent uneven absorption. For maximum protection, apply a second coat while the first coat is still damp, but not wet—ideally within 20–30 minutes of the first application.
Keep in mind that heat and humidity can reduce the drying time between coats, so monitor closely. For best results, work in smaller sections and avoid letting the product fully dry between coats to ensure optimal penetration and waterproofing performance.
NOTE: Color durability varies based on wood age, porosity, species, situation, exposure, and wood surface roughness.
For brown tints, the first coat’s thickness and color density are entirely customizable and up to the individual. The goal is to apply the tinted finish so that the color is visible but still transparent, allowing the wood grain to show through. While the wood is still wet, continue applying the tinted finish until you achieve your desired semi-transparency, then back-brush any pooling.
For black and gray tints, the first coat should appear more opaque, with some wood grain visible. The opacity is up to personal preference, but always back-brush any pooling for a smooth finish.
When applying a second coat, do so once the first coat has penetrated and the surface is still damp, but not wet. Since WiseCoat® is a waterproofing finish, allowing it to dry will make it resistant to a second application due to its water-based formulation. The second coat should be applied within 20-30 minutes after the first coat. Heat and humidity can decrease the time between coats.

WiseCoat® vs Ipe Oil® Q: Can I apply WiseCoat® over the Ipe Oil® finish? The WiseCoat® Clear adds deep penetrating protection and will allow the wood to age and turn a sliver patina.
The WiseCoat® Tints are semi-transparent colorants that enhance the natural splendor and beauty of wood without drastically changing the color of the wood.
WiseCoat® is also safe for use around people, pets, and plants and is safe for the environment.
Crafting a maintenance plan for your deck or fence is entirely up to you, based on your region’s climate, sun exposure, and the wear your wood endures. Some may prefer an annual recoating, while others may find every other year or longer, sufficient. No matter your schedule, WiseCoat® Clear Wood Sealer’s waterproofing protection remains hard at work, keeping moisture at bay—even if your wood has weathered and grayed.
When applied clear and the wood has lost its luster, DeckWise® Wood Cleaner and Brightener will revive its natural beauty. For high-traffic or worn areas, a quick recoat boosts waterproofing and extends the life of your deck or fence.
When tinted, WiseCoat®’s color durability depends on wood age, porosity, species, exposure, and surface texture. Tints may fade faster in high-traffic or fully exposed areas, while protected surfaces retain color with minimal upkeep. To prepare for maintenance, use DeckWise® Wood Cleaner and Brightener to remove dirt and grime. Reapply your color tinted WiseCoat® Wood Sealer as needed to maintain both beauty and color.
Horizontal surfaces exposed to full weather may need recoating every 6–12 months, while vertical surfaces, like siding or cladding, can go much longer between applications.
To counteract potential color changes and maintain vibrant aesthetics, we recommend a follow-up application of tinted WiseCoat® Wood Sealer after the initial weathering period. This proactive measure enhances color intensity and durability, especially as the wood surface becomes rougher and more absorbent of pigment over time. The timing for recoating with our wood sealer and waterproofer depends on your specific regional weather conditions and foot traffic, allowing you to be the judge of when it's appropriate.
For horizontal surfaces like decking that endure regular foot traffic, it's advisable to choose a WiseCoat® Tint that closely matches the wood you've selected. While the option to entirely change the color is available, selecting a closer match ensures a seamless blend and better aesthetic appeal.
In the case of wood cladding and fencing, you have the opportunity to achieve a significantly higher intensity of color, transforming the original tone of the wood. Even lighter-colored wood species can adopt an almost solid Black, Gray, or Brown appearance when the wood surface is suitably rough. Additional coats or a higher pigment loading can further amplify this transformative effect.
Achieving optimal color intensity with WiseCoat® Tint involves a strategic process, especially when dealing with new, smoothly milled wood decking or cladding that tends to have a restricting mill glaze. Follow these steps to enhance color vibrancy:
Surface Preparation: Create a rougher surface by using DeckWise® Wood Cleaner and Brightener. For even better results, consider sanding the new wood with 120 grit paper to remove mill glaze and create a more textured surface.
Roughness Equals Intensity: The rougher the wood surface, the greater the color intensity and durability. Rough sawn or heavily brushed wood profiles may require more sealer and color, resulting in a bolder color contrast.
Variable Mill Glaze: The amount of mill glaze can vary significantly based on species density and the machining method used.
Note: We strongly recommend testing a pre-mixed sample of your chosen WiseCoat® Tint on your specific wood type before initiating your project. For your convenience, you can order a pre-mixed sample [here](link to order form).
WiseCoat® Tint colorants should only be used alongside WiseCoat® Clear Wood Sealer, as these products are meticulously designed to complement each other and are not compatible with other brands or third-party products. The final color and finish of all WiseCoat® products are influenced by various factors such as wood color, species, age, and condition. Wood Tints displayed on the DeckWise® website may appear different when applied to your specific wood. Given potential variations, it is recommended to obtain a pre-mixed sample or test a scrape piece of wood to evaluate color choice and product suitability before proceeding with your project.
While DeckWise® strives for consistency in WiseCoat® tinted products, occasional color variations may arise between made-up products and pre-mixed samples. Possible contributing factors include differences in pre-mixed wood Tint storage times, transport and storage conditions, human error, and variations in raw materials.
